Day 9: Just Thankful I Didn’t Hit a Deer

deer crossingHonestly, today, I’m just grateful I made it back in one tired piece last night from my foray to Charlottesville.

It wouldn’t be accurate to say that Herman woke up yesterday morning with a horrific allergy attack. In fact, he had already been awake half the night sneezing, snorting, and rubbing his eyes. We were both pretty wiped out but I was determined to go on to see Tippi Hedren in person. And I was equally determined that he would stay home and rest.

So for the first time in quite a few years, I ventured on a bit of road trip after dark. I’m getting too old and too dependent on my sweet husband’s protective company for this. Continue reading

Day 8: Grateful Finally to Solve a Hitchcock Mystery

Tippi Hedren and Edith Head's Costume for The Birds

Tippi Hedren and Edith Head’s Costume for The Birds

Later today, I’ll be heading down the road about 60 miles to Charlottesville to see Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds at the historic Paramount Theater. Afterward, there will be a live Q&A session with Tippi Hedren, icy blonde star of the movie, and, oh, by the way, Melanie Griffith’s mother.

The event is a highlight of the 2013 Virginia Film Festival.

I generally love Hitchcock; The Birds not so much.

Maybe it’s because I am always distracted by the suit. The trim, slim, sickly green Edith Head suit that Hedren wore through 90 percent of the action.

That thing has driven me crazy for years. Continue reading

Day Three: Thanks Be for Holiday Movies

Countdown to ChristmasI know I’m supposed to be kvetching about how it’s only the third of November and Day Three of Thirty Days of Thanksgiving . . . and yet, the commercial world is already awash in Christmas hoopla.

Too much.

Too early.

Too crass.

I hear you.

But I am just so darned excited that the annual Countdown to Christmas has begun over at the Hallmark Channel.

Holiday Movies – All Day! All Night! (exclamation points theirs)

Plus

(Plus? OMG.  I am so excited!)

New Premieres Every Saturday and Sunday Night

Notice that’s not just “premieres,” that’s “new premieres.” How much better can it get? Is there anything newer than a new new thing?

I can barely contain myself. I love to wallow in Hallmark’s slow-paced, who-in-the-heck-is that-actor? meets didn’t-I-see-her-on-a-soap-opera? movies. They tug at my heart and make me happy. And during languid musical interludes, I look up the cast on IMDb, the Internet Movie Database.

Call me ridiculous. Call me romantic. I don’t care. The Countdown to Christmas is my well-deserved reward for waiting out all those slasher flicks during October.

Bottom line: I am thankful I now can use the remote without fear of accidentally peeping something that will give me nightmares.

So praise the Lord and pass that bowl of popcorn. It’s too early to string it, but I am settling in for a long autumn night of A Christmas Wish and Hitched for the Holidays.
