Day Five: Thank Goodness He’s from Toronto

We are electing a governor today in Virginia and the cable news networks are a-Twitter.

The polls closed at 7:00 p.m. It’s 8:24 now. And, to be honest, at this point, I expected it all to be over including the shouting.

Instead, it’s too close to call.

Ken Cucinelli, the uber conservative everyone thought was bound to lose is actually ahead–though the Washington D.C. suburbs have not been counted. They’re expected to boost Democrat Terry McAuliffe to victory. And I’m starting to wonder if even a vaguely humorous post is such a good idea. Continue reading

Day Four: I’m Grateful that I’m (Almost) Over Pumpkin

In case you haven’t noticed, this is pumpkin season in America. I don’t mean the big orange gourds that grow on sprawling vines. I mean the flavor, which has become ub-everywhere-iquitous from October through the first of December, when gingerbread vies for its own shot at number one.

Pumpkin Spice Latte even has a hashtag: #PSL

A piece last month on Quartz by Christopher Mims explains how Starbucks stumbled on the stuff ten years ago and examines just how badly the trend has gotten out of hand.

Although I drank so many PSLs in the early years that every Fall I developed a pumpkinish roundness to my cheeks–all four of them–I’m thankful to say I’m finally over it.

As usual, my poor husband, Herman, was the last to know. Continue reading

Day Three: Thanks Be for Holiday Movies

Countdown to ChristmasI know I’m supposed to be kvetching about how it’s only the third of November and Day Three of Thirty Days of Thanksgiving . . . and yet, the commercial world is already awash in Christmas hoopla.

Too much.

Too early.

Too crass.

I hear you.

But I am just so darned excited that the annual Countdown to Christmas has begun over at the Hallmark Channel.

Holiday Movies – All Day! All Night! (exclamation points theirs)

(Plus? OMG.  I am so excited!)

New Premieres Every Saturday and Sunday Night

Notice that’s not just “premieres,” that’s “new premieres.” How much better can it get? Is there anything newer than a new new thing?

I can barely contain myself. I love to wallow in Hallmark’s slow-paced, who-in-the-heck-is that-actor? meets didn’t-I-see-her-on-a-soap-opera? movies. They tug at my heart and make me happy. And during languid musical interludes, I look up the cast on IMDb, the Internet Movie Database.

Call me ridiculous. Call me romantic. I don’t care. The Countdown to Christmas is my well-deserved reward for waiting out all those slasher flicks during October.

Bottom line: I am thankful I now can use the remote without fear of accidentally peeping something that will give me nightmares.

So praise the Lord and pass that bowl of popcorn. It’s too early to string it, but I am settling in for a long autumn night of A Christmas Wish and Hitched for the Holidays.
